A tube light, or fluorescent lamp, is a gas-discharge light that converts electricity into visible light through a low-pressure mercury vapor discharge. An electric current excites mercury vapor, producing ultraviolet (UV) light, which then causes a phosphor coating on the inside of the glass tube to glow, emitting visible light.
